The role

The Fundamental Analyst role is a pivotal member of the trading team. The role is responsible for building independent, detailed and well researched analysis on global grain commodity fundamentals, including supply and demand balance sheets and projected trade flows, that will feed into strategies and campaigns and identify and develop market opportunities. To achieve this the role must be able to research independently, locating and sourcing the best available information globally whilst working collaboratively with the Head of Trading and Trading Managers, as well as with co-members of our international research group, to build commodity trading strategies. To be successful in the role strong communication and influencing skills are required to challenge the strategies of the trading team based on a deep understanding of market requirements, grain product knowledge and market conditions. The role must also ensure that the tools and applications are in place to communicate fundamental analysis research within the business and facilitate increased financial performance and decision making


Key responsibilities

  • Independently research grain markets related to the Marketing & Trading commodity products sourcing the best available information inputs globally

  • Analyse data regarding grain consumer patterns and preferences

  • Interpret and predict current and future consumer trends across grain markets

  • Support business growth and development through the preparation and execution of policies and programs

  • Work collaboratively with information providers and members of our global fundamental research group, presenting research views and forecasts and incorporating their input

  • Provide detailed market analysis and forecast global grain supply and demand balances and trade flows for relevant grains based on a deep understanding of relevant markets and commodity products

  • Communicate fundamental research and opinion clearly and concisely to the trading group, the organisation and external parties when required

  • Challenge trading strategy as appropriate based on defendable research

  • Identify gaps in fundamental information pertinent to the business and provide solutions

  • Oversee the build of internal applications and tools used to capture, manage and display supply and demand information

  • Assist the quantitative team with the development of trade flow and pricing models as required

  • Provide commodity analysis and forward fundamental views to the CBH supply chain business as required

  • Assist the trading team in achieving trading contribution targets by providing valuable information insight and trading strategy

  • Derive maximum value from CBH’s information service providers and participation in the global research group


Skills and experience

  • Degree in business and/or agriculture

  • Minimum 5 years experience in developing and operating fundamental commodity data models

  • Extensive experience in fundamental research for grain commodities including wheat, barley and canola

  • Knowledge of global grain production and supply chain systems

  • Strong communication and influencing skills

  • Ability to challenge strategy based on a deep understanding of market requirements

  • Ability to work independently and collaborate as required

  • Knowledge of major grain origin information sources and trade flows
